I bought this for my wife’s bicycle early last summer and waited 6 mos. before writing a review. The install was straightforward with help from YouTube videos and having the motor on the bicycle is amazing. My wife enjoys riding with us again and I don’t think we’ll ever go back.
INSTALL:
The kit seemed to include everything needed, but we found that on her bicycle (2007 Schwinn 700c Pathway series) the rear rack wouldn’t clear the seat when in its lowest position, so I made some aluminum brackets to re-position the rack back about 1″ on the frame. I also installed a small plastic bottle under the hub to conceal the extra length of wiring and used some protective woven cord sleeve and some Legrand Cordmate C10 wireway with sticky back to secure wiring below the frame for a clean almost factory look.
USE:
1. Amazing Power – This mid-drive motor tackles big hills with ease. The hub drive bike we rented on a vacation recently struggled on similar hills.
2. Shifting gears – She seldom shifts gears and typically stays in the same gear and power setting for the entire ride, but we found that shifting gears with the hub motor needs to be a planned event (only shift gears under light peddle pressure) Conversely, shifting gears on the hub drive (even under load) was seamless since it operates separately from the gears.
3. Battery – it’s quite heavy and when installed up high on the rear rack changes the balance of the bike making it unsuitable for mountain biking. It is at its best on paved trails where the balance of the bike isn’t subject to abrupt changes. We purchased the larger size battery which appears to be quite a bit more than we needed. I borrowed her bicycle recently for a 40-mile ride on a gravel trail which only depleted the battery by 1-bar even riding fast on a medium-high assist setting leaving me thinking that the smaller size battery would’ve been a better choice for our typically casual riding style.
4. Controller – I bought the small controller, which may have been a mistake. It fits on the handlebar nicely, but it’s difficult for her to see the power setting.
5. Overall Summary – She loves it, the Bafang 750w mid drive motor has power to spare and even the steepest hills disappear. Long rides are effortless, and she has no trouble keeping up with the rest of the group. We have to remind her to slow down so the rest of us can catch up sometimes she only grins and leaves us in the dust.

Installed the BBS02 750 watt mid drive kit on my Dahon Mariner in hopes of building the ultimate urban commuting bike. Not only was it a success, but I’d say it exceeded my expectations as well.
The kit contained everything I needed for the install. There’s really no instructional manual, but the kit is so well designed that everything comes together intuitively. It all came together without a single hiccup for me. The kit was very fun to work with. If you’re somewhat mechanically inclined, you’ll most likely have no issues putting the kit together. A lot of it depends on what kind of bike you’re working with as well.
My bike is a completely different animal now. I have so much fun riding around town, I never want to get off the bike now! I also upgraded the stock tires with Maxxis Hookworms and the ride is much more comfortable and responsive. With my specific gearing on the Dahon, I topped out at around 34 mph on flat streets using throttle only. At those speeds, peddling does nothing as I cant keep up with the speed of the motor. You can also use the Speeed app on Android to fine tune the motor’s response just the way you want it. Really looking forward to stepping up to a BBSHD. Now I’m on the hunt for a mountain bike to convert.

It’s been almost a month since I purchased this kit and so far, I am generally very satisfied with my purchase. The motor is excellent, the battery is a quality build (Panasonic cells), the installation was easy. The kit was complete with no missing parts and shipped in a timely fashion within the given time frame and the vendor was very helpful and accommodating so far.
My only disappointment was with the display unit (DPC18). Don’t get me wrong, it is a very nice unit, however when i researched it on the net prior to my purchase, videos and articles I’ve seen mentioned that PAS level can be set to 0-3, 0-5 or 0-9 depending on how fine you want to tune your pedal assist. I was surprised to see that my display had the PAS level pre-set to 0-5 and cannot be changed. When I contacted the vendor about this i was told that their listing specifies that the PAS level is 0-5 on the DPC18. They are right, I simply missed that detail on one of the listing pictures. Apparently BAFANG changed this display to support only 5 assist levels. Older versions supported 9. So if you want to modify default assist values to your style of riding using a special USB cable (that you can buy separately), how do you know which 5 of the 9 available levels this display picks from the motor. I asked the question to the vendor and they replied with a chart of PAS mappings for 3, 5 or 9 assist levels of the motor to the display. Turns out a display (DPC18 in this case) with a fixed 5 PAS levels, actually maps levels 0,2,4,6,8 and 9 from the motor. So, by programming these assist levels with the USB cable, one can customize PAS to their liking.
When it comes to the performance of the motor, it is torquey, fast and very quiet. Good torque to zip through intersections very quickly, and to climb up the steepest hills without breaking a sweat, and it’s also fast on flat terrain. I can reach 48-50kmh (31mph) on flat terrain with the 48v, 17.5ah battery. That’s way above the legal e-Bike speed limit where I live. Although fast is exciting, I would suggest being easy with the throttle on a bicycle. Battery range is also excellent if you go easy with speed and PAS. Can’t give you an exact number as this will change substantially depending on your style of riding.
All in all, you can’t go wrong with this purchase, especially from this vendor. My previous attempt to buy this kit had turned into a problem with another dishonest seller, so it is important to pick the right vendor for a happy ending.

Great way to electrify a good bike. Instructions were minimal unless you could download the instructions. I was easier to view on Utube than to try and download instructions. The end result was great. Easy to operate and fun to ride.
